I have a JD4400 with 38 hours. This weekend while mowing the rear wheel came off. I checked the other wheels and most of the other lug bolts where loose.

Did the dealer set this up ?!? Thats definately a dealer problem ! They are supposed to check all of that before they get delivered. P.S. they do get delivered to the dealership with the wheels on from J.D. , but if the dealer had to swap em or widen em for some reason... that still should have been caght before you got it! Hope no one got hurt!joe ....

Probably left rear. I had new JD4200 and at about 20 hours,found lugs nuts loose, more so on left rear. Dealer said vibration loosens as lugs are tightened at factory on top of new paint. ....

Danny, it's not at all unusual to experience loose wheel bolts or nuts on new tractors. Read your operators manual. The manual for my John Deere 5310States the following: 1. After driving the tractor about 100 yds. and before placing it under load, retighten wheel hardware to specified torque. 2. Check wheel hardware after working 3 hours and again after 10 hours. 3. Check wheel torque again at 50 hours and at every 50 hour service interval thereafter. ....

Walt, how do you like your 5310? I'm looking at compact tractors right now and I'm thinking the 4000 series is not enough HP for me. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Jim ....

Jim, I love it. I tried to locate either a JD 4500 or 4600 with 4WD for about two months this past summer with no luck. In August I found the JD 5310 at a nearby dealer. It was a rental unit, a 1998 model 4WD with 195 hours in perfect condition. It looks brand new. The total price was $19,500. no sales tax. It was a little more than what I was lookibg for but at that price i felt I couldn't turn it down. It still has the full 2-year factory warranty beginning at time of my purchase and the balance of the 2,000 hour warranty (1805 hrs). The 5310 has a 65hp 3cyl 171 cubic inch turbocharged diesel engine with 55 PTO HP. It weighs 5,000 lbs as compared to the 4500/4600 which weighs in at 3600lbs. It has full syncro shuttle shift transmission with 9 fwd and 3 reverse speeds and a folding ROPS. I live in a small farming community in SW Georgia. All the dealers in this area claim that if I decide to sell it I can find 10 buyers for the 5310 for every one that I could find for the 4000 series. They may or may not be right??? I put a new Bush-Hog brand loader on it with 120" lift and 3500lbs capacity for an additional $3,950. My brother has a 25hp Mitsubishi 4WD compact that weighs about 2500lbs that he turned over I picked it up with my loader and a chain and set it upright for him with no problem. I have 850 acres of pine trees and bought it mostly for road work and spraying kudsu. I also do some mowing with a 7ft rotary mower. I use a 7' rear grader blade with variable angle and pitch that weighs 550lbs which does a great job making terraces for errosion controll, dragging out ditches and crowning roads. My sprayer mounts on the 3-pt hitch and carries 55 galons.I'm glad I couldn't find a 4000 series. Hope this info helps. ....

I have also experienced this problem and it continues to this day. I have 300 hours on the tractor and have to stop and remove the wheels weights every 30-50 hours to retorque the bolts. I have finally tried lock tite to see if that will help. So far so good, 75 hours without loosening. Though the dealer feels it is a problem, our good friends at Deere will not admit it. Keep us posted if it happens again. ....

I have a 4300 with the same problem. Scared me a bit as I had been driving on the road, going up and down hills in the fields and so on, when I happened to notice the bolts were not even finger tight. I thought that the dealer had messed up when I last had it in, but a couple of weeks later they were loose again. Now I check them each time I use the machine. As mentioned in one of the other posts, it is always the left rear.Not much help, but you are not alone.Doug ....

Thanks for the info! I think I will look for a used one too! (if I can find one) The new ones seem pretty expensive, but I want plenty of power and I certainly like the idea of have the turbo charged diesel. Thanks again! Jim ....
